The 2nd grade project is a biography/potato person. The kids got to choose the person and then do research to present the biography to the class. A potato, looking like your chosen person had to accompany this project. I picked Elizabeth up from school and she was so excited to tell me who she had chosen. "Ruby Bridges, Mom!!!" WHO??? She had no idea who she was either so we had fun doing the research together. For any readers who also may not be familiar with Ruby, she was the first African American to attend a segregated school in the south in 1960.
This is Ruby in her school uniform. It was very hard for our fancy girl to make Ruby look plain. Elizabeth is not familiar with the school uniform concept and wanted to bedazzle everything! We compromised with the bow in the hair and two red gems (rubies!) on the straps of her jumper. The brown thing is her book bag with silver sparkly pipe cleaner straps! Her teacher said she did a terrific job presenting. The potatoes were on display in the library, but only for a short time. They were asked to bring them home before they started stinking up the school!
