You say Topeka, I say Towanda

There was a scientific scavenger hunt booklet that the kids got before school was out. It had different locations to visit during the summer and certain things to look for at the locations and then you got the book stamped. We went to the botanical garden and Riverfront Museum. One day at swimming I mentioned to my friend that there was this booklet and there was a fish hatchery as one of the locations. She is a teacher at the school and she had actually organized for the school to receive these fun booklets and she wanted to go take her kids to the fish hatchery too! ROAD TRIP!

From the pictures you can tell that we did indeed make it to the fish hatchery but not without a story! It all started with two moms, four kids and the driver (me) turning off the GPS the first 5 minutes into the trip. My reading comprehension skills are not as sharp as they once were and I thought we were going somewhere near Towanda which is about 45 minutes East of our house. After driving that direction for 40 minutes we realized that I had indeed guided us in exactly the wrong direction because the fish hatchery was not near Towanda, but Topeka. We had told the kids that after we went to the hatchery we would go to a donut shop. Given that we had a swim meet that night we had to make a choice...just do donuts, OR skip the donuts and find the fishery but it would take another hour to get there! To our pleasant surprise the kids said they were good without donuts (perhaps the donut tour was still to fresh!) and they wanted to get to the hatchery! This time using GPS we drove right to the Jake Wolf Memorial Fish Hatchery! And let me just say it was an amazing little field trip!

When we first walked in it appeared as though we had to schedule a tour ahead time and this was really a bust. However, we took a chance and called and scheduled a tour in 5 minutes. They sent a guy right up to give just the 6 of us a tour. We saw the inside, the outside, got to feed the fish, ask questions, etc... This 20 something guy was so kind to the kids and incredibly patient with all of their questions. Kate and I were trying to figure out who we could set him up with - quite the catch :) (pun intended).

So my horrible sense of direction lead us on a longer than expected adventure but it was so worth it!
